With the rising electricity bills and energy crisis in Pakistan, people are shifting towards alternative energy sources. Among these, the most popular solution is installing a Solar System with a Green Meter (Net Metering System). A green meter allows consumers not only to fulfill their own electricity needs but also to sell the extra electricity back to WAPDA/DISCOs and receive credits or reductions in bills.
1. What is a Green Meter?
A Green Meter, also known as a Net Meter, is a special type of meter that records both the import and export of electricity. If your solar system produces more electricity than you consume, the extra electricity is sent back to the grid, and you are credited for it.
2. Eligibility for Green Meter Installation
- You must have a solar system (with a Grid-Tied Inverter).
- The system capacity should be a minimum of 3 kW and a maximum of 1 MW.
- The electricity bill, CNIC, and property should be under your name.
3. Required Documents
- Copy of CNIC
- Latest electricity bill
- Proof of property ownership (or tenancy agreement with NOC from the owner)
- Details of solar system (Inverter, Panels, and Capacity)
- NEPRA approval (usually handled by certified solar companies)
4. Step-by-Step Process to Apply for a Green Meter
Step 1: Choose a Certified Solar Company
Select a solar company that is registered with NEPRA and approved by your respective DISCO (LESCO, MEPCO, KE, etc.).
Step 2: Application Submission
The company will submit a Net Metering Application on your behalf.
Step 3: Feasibility & Inspection
Your electricity provider (DISCO) will inspect your solar system to ensure it complies with grid standards.
Step 4: Agreement Signing
If everything is approved, a Net Metering Agreement will be signed between you and the company.
Step 5: Meter Installation
The DISCO will replace your old meter with a Green/Net Meter.
Step 6: Activation
Once activated, you can start exporting electricity to the grid and receiving credits.
5. Time Frame for Installation
The complete process usually takes 30 to 90 days, depending on the DISCO and processing speed.
6. Cost of Green Meter
- The price of a green meter ranges from PKR 20,000 to PKR 40,000.
- This cost is separate from the solar system and installation charges.
7. Benefits of Green Meter
- Significant reduction in monthly electricity bills
- Ability to sell extra electricity back to the grid
- Reduced effects of load-shedding
- Promotion of eco-friendly and renewable energy
